Lanternhouse, Ulverston, Cumbria: The new headquarters for the arts organization Welfare State International occupies the buildings and site of a former National School constructed in the 1830s. The existing building has been completely transformed with the addition of towers, and original, commissioned artwork including the lattice spire by Jamie McCullough. The project won a Civic Trust award in 2001 and a RIBA National Award in 2000. Built with Arts Council support and a Lottery Grant of £1.6m.
